Meet Dr. Muffly

Dr. Matthew T. Muffly is a highly skilled and compassionate orthopaedic surgeon dedicated to providing exceptional care to his patients. With over a decade of experience in orthopedic surgery and academic medicine, Dr. Muffly specializes in advanced treatments for knee and shoulder conditions, helping patients regain mobility, reduce pain, and improve their quality of life. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and was previously the Assistant Program Director for Resident Education at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Muffly attended the University of Pittsburgh Honors College for undergraduate education, obtaining degrees in neuroscience and chemistry. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the prestigious Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Following medical school, he returned to Pittsburgh for residency training in orthopaedic surgery at Allegheny General Hospital. During residency, he was recognized for his leadership, serving as his residency program’s delegate for the AAOS, and research, being awarded first place at his institution’s annual research conference. After completing residency, he came to Southern California for fellowship training in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine with the Santa Monica Orthopaedic Group through the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan Jobe Institute. He also traveled to Osaka, Japan to work with Dr. Teruhisa Mihata and learn his advanced technique for superior capsule reconstruction of the shoulder.

Throughout his residency and fellowship, Dr. Muffly refined his skills in cutting edge techniques and received extensive training in shoulder and knee arthroscopy and cartilage restoration techniques; anterior approach total hip arthroplasty; robotic-assisted unicompartmental and total knee arthroplasty. He also served on the medical staff of numerous organizations, including the Upper St Clair High School Football Team, Pittsburgh Pirates, US Men’s & Women’s National Soccer Teams, LA Galaxy, LA Football Club, Pepperdine University, Santa Monica College, Malibu High School, St. Monica Catholic High School, Santa Monica Rugby Club, and The Genesis Invitational PGA Tour Golf Tournament

Research, Innovation, and Education

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Muffly is a published researcher with contributions to advancements in orthopedic care, including studies on fracture management and surgical innovation. His dedication to staying at the forefront of orthopedic medicine allows him to provide the latest and most effective treatments available. As an assistant clinical professor, he trains residents at Harbor-UCLA and UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training programs.
